Pichia. A yeast. Oval-shaped, budding asymmetrically, colonies smooth and cream-coloured on standard media. Used industrially in protein expression. Occasionally an opportunist. Entirely unremarkable on the plate.

Under the microscope it buds in soft, asymmetric clusters — daughter cells forming at the surface, each slightly different from the last. The Science in Bloom collection took that morphology and gave it petals. The budding forms become layered blooms. The smooth yeast surface becomes a pearlescent botanical texture. Pastel pinks and hazy violets — not organism-accurate, entirely intentional.
